The History of the VerticalMovie Festival

The VerticalMovie Festival, founded in 2018 in Rome from an idea by Salvatore Marino, is the first international festival entirely dedicated to audiovisual works in vertical format. At a time when 9:16 had not yet taken over social networks, the festival was able to anticipate the potential of the smartphone not only as a screen, but as a true creative and empathetic language, capable of bringing storytellers and audiences closer together.

The first edition took place in the evocative setting of Piazza del Popolo, animated for four days by screenings, meetings, and discussions with authors and artists from all over the world. Rai Radio2 was the official radio partner of the event and, on the occasion of VerticalMovie, launched its Instagram TV channel, marking a symbolic step toward a new way of experiencing audiovisual content.

Today, Vertical Movie Festival is an international, dynamic, and constantly evolving platform, showcasing works from 121 countries across all five continents. At the heart of the project remains the theme of Green, understood as a concrete commitment to environmental sustainability and social responsibility, expressed through the different competition sections.

The festival is also a space for discovering and supporting emerging talent, encouraging original visions, daring narratives, and innovative forms of expression. The eighth edition further featured a retrospective of the most iconic works from past editions, giving audiences insight into the evolution of the vertical format and its influence on contemporary narrative forms.

Today, Vertical Movie Festival stands as more than an event: it is a creative community and a hub for visionary filmmakers, courageous storytellers, and new voices, supported by RAI, the City of Rome, and under the patronage of the Metropolitan City of Rome, reaffirming its cultural significance and its position in the global audiovisual scene.
