The file must be encoded in H264 or H265, and the container format must be MP4 or MOV.  Audiovisuals can be created with any devices that allow shooting in the aforementioned modes.

The Vertical Movie Festival is a contest aimed at discovering new talents in screenwriting, directing, photography, editing, costumes, and acting, requiring participants to tell short audiovisual stories with video shots exclusively in vertical (portrait) format.

The VII Edition of the Vertical Movie Festival will be held in Rome from December 4 to 6, 2024, at the Cinecittà Roma studios.

SECTIONS IN COMPETITION

1. Vertical Green: Works in this section must address a green theme: ecology, sustainability, renewable energies, and environmental respect. The maximum duration of the work must be 10 minutes.

2. Vertical Open: Free theme section. The maximum duration of the work must be 10 minutes.

3. Vertical Song: Section for music videos. The duration is related to the length of the music track.

4. Vertical Tuscia: “Think global, act local,” suggested Zygmunt Bauman. And the Vertical Movie Festival, which has recorded strong international participation in its first six editions, takes up the invitation and includes among its sections one aimed at enhancing one of the most fascinating territories of the peninsula, straddling the borders of Lazio, Umbria, and Tuscany: the Tuscia. To put the new languages of vertical cinema at the service of art, history, popular traditions, and the food and wine excellence of the ancient land of the Etruscans. The maximum duration of the work must be 10 minutes. The section is edited by Marco Stancati, business communicator and professor at Sapienza.

5. Vertical Drama: Collects works where theatrical writing is the starting point. A monologue or a dialogue between two or three characters will be the subject for creating a vertical short film with a maximum duration of 10 minutes. The section is curated by Maximilian Nisi.

6. Vertical Literacy: Aims to promote audiovisual works that can be linked to the great protagonists of 20th-century literature. To achieve this goal, filmmakers will be offered a range of short stories by important names of the short century (Pirandello, Bontempelli, Moravia, etc.) with a strong visual impact. The maximum duration of the work must be 10 minutes. The section is curated by Prof. Giovanni La Rosa.

7. Vertical Fashion: The world of fashion was the first to make use of the 9/16 video format, exploiting one of the most powerful peculiarities of vertical framing: the extreme close-up of the entire human figure filling the entire screen. This section collects works that tell the story of the fashion and glamorous trends of the moment. The maximum duration of the work must be 10 minutes. The section is curated by designer Marco Coretti.
